Using
Beyond Question in Higher Education Classrooms
Beyond Question
gives professors a broad range of ways to improve the learning
environment. You can perform anonymous surveys to get students'
honest opinions on topics that might be difficult to discuss.
Shy students feel empowered because they can freely participate
without concern for embarrassment. The more professors have their
finger on the pulse of the class, the better they can teach the
students.
An effective way to get any class
off to a good start is to ask three to five questions to determine
if the students did their homework. Knowing you will do this several
times per week, students will realize they have to do the work
or else you will know they didn't. You might also use these questions
to review a previous lecture which is the basis of the new lecture.
This encourages them to be alert at the beginning of class and
ready to learn.
To keep students focused and on
task during the lecture, use Beyond Question to ask a couple
of quick review questions every 10 -15 minutes. The students will
remain alert and attentive because they know questions will be
asked. When wrapping up the lecture, ask a few questions to be
sure the students understood the material.
There are many ways to leverage
the power of Beyond Question in your classes. The simplest
method is to simply ask verbal questions and have the students
respond with their remotes. The results can be immediately displayed
to the class and discussed further if needed. Another option would
be to write questions on the board or display a transparency on
an overhead projector.
The next level of usage is to
prepare a few questions in advance of the class and insert them
into the lecture to make sure the students are following along
and understand the material. By using the word processing capabilities
within Beyond Question, you can create questions with objective
answers. You can also define an answer key and assign point values
to enable automatic scoring.
Assessments can be developed to
be used as a group exercise or self-paced, whereby the students
use their remotes to work at their own speed. If you have electronic
versions of quizzes and tests, Beyond Question can open
the file and create individual questions. If you add an answer
key you can give the test, grade it, and save it to your gradebook
or open it in Excel for further analysis.
One of the most powerful methods
of using Beyond Question is to automatically open and present
lectures in PowerPoint. Many textbook publishers and subject matter
websites have content that you can download to your computer and
directly present to your class. This provides the ability to deliver
colorful, creative, and engaging lectures that will keep the students'
attention.
